Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence of your proficiency in English before you can begin the course. You are strongly advised to take either the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) or the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination. The Department's entry requirements are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 600 (including the Test of Written English), TOEFL 250 (computer based test) and TOEFL 100 (internet based test). The Department will also consider the SQA Higher English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Grade B or better.

More information about IELTS can be obtained from the local British Council office in your country, or by writing directly to the Examinations Unit, British Council, c/o Enterprises, 10 Spring Gardens, London. SW1A 2BN.

You can find out more about TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) from the American Embassy in your own country, or by contacting the Education Testing Service, PO Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA.

The University's English Language Teaching Division offers pre-entry and pre-sessional courses for new international students from April each year. Full fee paying students are entitled to one month of the pre-sessional English course free of charge. For more information, contact the English Language Teaching Division directly.
