Academic Year
The academic year at Strathclyde comprises two semesters: Semester 1 runs from late September to the end of January; Semester 2 from February to mid-June. At the end of each semester there is a Diet of Examinations and there is also a re-sit Diet of Examinations in August.
At the start of the first semester of each year you will meet with your Adviser of Study to decide on the classes that you will take through the year, which will include both compulsory and optional classes. If you do not like an optional class then it is possible to change that class up to the end of the third week of each semester.
The MPhys programmes offered by the Physics Department have classes that are modular in nature and each of the modules has a credit weighting and associated academic level. Progression from year to year and the award of the degree are determined by total number of credits you have accumulated during your period of study. You need a minimum of 600 credits to be awarded the degree. For students entering above year one, you will be given the minimum number credits associated with the years that you have missed in recognition of your prior learning.
